In 2021, Wizards of the Coast introduced it could be including Warhammer 40,000-themed playing cards to Magic: The Gathering as a part of its Universes Past growth sequence. Which continues to be a bit mind-blowing, to be sincere. Extra proof this was not a dream comes within the type of a primary take a look at the Warhammer 40,000 collaboration, which provides some particulars on what kind the crossover will take, and reveals off a handful of the brand new playing cards.

First, there will probably be 4 premade 100-card decks for taking part in Commander, which is Magic’s informal, four-players-around-the-kitchen-table mode. Playing cards from these decks may also be authorized in Legacy and Classic mode. The 4 units are Tyranid Swarm (inexperienced/blue/purple), Forces of the Imperium (white/blue/black), The Ruinous Powers (blue/black/purple), and Necron Dynasties (mono-black).

I am shocked to not see decks for the eldar or t’au, each of that are fairly well-liked armies on the tabletop, however glad that a minimum of a few them are broadly themed. Forces of the Imperium will embody house marines, tech-priests, inquisitors, and presumably some sisters of battle and imperial guard, whereas the Ruinous Powers deck, which options Abaddon the Despoiler as its Commander, could have chaos house marines, daemons, and different disciples of the darkish gods.

In addition to the Commander decks, there will probably be three “secret lair” drops, that are what Wizards of the Coast calls Magic’s restricted launch small units, with both alternate artwork for current playing cards (like the present Satisfaction throughout the Multiverse drop), or a handful of recent playing cards which might be a bit on the market (just like the Strolling Lifeless tie-in playing cards from again in 2020).

One of many three secret lair drops will comprise extra Warhammer 40,000 playing cards, this time themed across the orks. Purple and inexperienced, I assume? They’d be lacking a trick in the event that they did not embody a Purple Ones Go Fasta card. The opposite two secret lair drops are surprisingly from two of Video games Workshop’s different settings: the heavy steel high-fantasy Age of Sigmar and the gridiron-with-goblins sports activities parody Blood Bowl, although none of these playing cards have been previewed but.

The Warhammer x Magic: The Gathering collaboration’s worldwide launch is scheduled for August 12, with the key lair drop operating from August 12–22. I reached out to Wizards of the Coast to ask if any of those playing cards may also be showing within the recreation’s digital model, Magic: The Gathering Enviornment, and sadly they will be for tabletop solely.
